General List of Area Activities
Sample 5-Day Itinerary
Arrive in the afternoon or evening; explore the house and gardens and enjoy dinner out at one of our fine local restaurants; then relax in the hot tub.
Day 1 - Gettysburg - Tour the battlefields by car, bike, or segui with a guide if you like. Be sure to check out the wonderful new Gettysburg Visitors Center, have lunch at one of Gettysburg's great restaurants, and check out Hauser or Adam's County Wineries. There are several good museums, ghost tours, and some nice shops in town as well.
Day 2 - Bike the Heritage Rail or NCR Trail. Bring your bike or rent one from Monkton Bikes if you prefer. You can bike south as far as 22 miles to Ashland, MD where the NCR trail ends. Riding this way you will mostly be in the Gunpowder State Park, along the river, mostly in the shade. There is just a small store in Monkton that is not always open, so pack snacks and water. OR, you can bike north as many as 19 miles, to York City. This way is more varied; there are farms, woods, Codorus Creek, and the little towns of Glen Rock and Seven Valleys. NIne miles north of us is Hanover Junction, the restored train station where Lincoln stopped, and 13 miles north is the old Howard train Tunnel.
Note: If you are an avid cyclist, take two days biking the trail, one to go north and the other to go south!
Day 3 - Amish Country - Drive to Lancaster County and check out the Amish Farms, handmade crafts, quilts, and high quality wood furniture. Take a buggy ride or enjoy a show at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre.
Day 4 - Ride the Steam Into History Train. Then tour the wineries on the Mason Dixon Wine Trail or spend the day on the Susquehanna Ale Trail!
Day 5 - You are in the Factory Tour Capital of the World! Enjoy a couple of York County's many factory tours (weekdays only) including Harley Davidson, Utz, Snyder's of Hanover, Wolfgang Candy, and Family Heirloom Weavers.
