We are fortunate to have excellent local restaurant options; some are even within walking or bike-riding distance from the Jackson House.
Captain Bob's Crabhouse (717) 235-1166 is right across the street from us and specializes in Maryland-style steamed crabs. They also serve broasted chicken and other seafood in a very casual indoor and outdoor setting. No bar but welcomes BYOB (for beer, see Seven below)
Glen Rock Mill Inn (717) 235-5918 is a fine-dining establishment in an old historic mill 3 miles away in Glen Rock along the rail trail. Traditional American fare, homemade desserts, great chef! Full bar. Reservations recommended on weekends.
Seven (717) 759-8707 is a fun, popular sports bar 2 miles away in New Freedom along the rail trail. The food is several steps above typical bar fare and the service is good. They also have a well-stocked carry-out beer store if you want to bring back some brew! Feel free to put it in the frig.
Paesanos (717) 235-4879 Best Pizza around!...and other good Italian food 2 miles away in New Freedom along the rail trail. Welcomes BYOB
In addition to our favorites above, there are plenty of fast food and chain restaurant options in Shrewsbury near Rt 83 just 2 miles away...including Cracker Barrel, Ruby Tuesday, Burger King, Five Guys, Panera, Chipotle, McDonald's, Wendy's, KFC, Chick-Fil-A, and Arby's. There are also good Chinese and Italian options in both Giant and Walmart Shopping Centers across from each other in Shrewsbury.
Bonkeys in New Freedom has wonderful homemade ice cream (summer months 'til 9PM!)
Buying Beer, Wine and Spirits
PA laws are such that it is expensive and difficult for restaurants to obtain licenses to sell beer and wine, but those that don't are happy to accomodate BYOB. Seven (above) has a good carry-out specialty beer store. For cases, there is a case and keg store in Shreswbury on Forest Ave. on the left just before you get to I83. Wine and spirits are at the state store in a separate strip center in the Walmart Shopping Center in Shrewsbury. Buying wine from the local wineries is another great option.
